Domain and Dialogue Knowledge in a Natural Language Information System

SCHISMA is a joint research project aimed at realizing a prototype dialogue system in the domain of theater information and booking. The prototype should be able to answer questions and to conduct a dialogue in Dutch with the user. Chapter two of this document discusses knowledge about conducting dialogues, especially goal-oriented dialogues. First, several approaches to dialogue modelling come into play. Then, some typical dialogue characteristics are discussed like dialogue structure, dialogue control, focus and user modelling. In the last section of this chapter recommendations for SCHISMA are given. In chapter three, domain knowledge is discussed. First some general remarks are made about the representation of that knowledge. After that some concepts are introduced and discussed in relation with existing theories and systems and their application in SCHISMA.
