摘要

On October 17, 1989 at 5:04 p.m., the San Francisco Bay region of California was shaken by the Loma Prieta earthquake. The magnitude 7.1 earthquake was the largest in the area since 1906. The losses suffered during the earthquake placed it near the top of the list of the most costly United States natural disasters. The earthquake caused many types of damage. With the aid of a grant from the Shimizu Corporation of Japan, researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, and the University of Texas, Austin, conducted Standard Penetration Tests (SPT), Cone Penetration Tests (CPT), and shear wave velocity tests (Vs) after the earthquake at several locations in the East Bay where soil liquefaction had occurred. In addition, Flat Plate Dilatometer (DMT) tests were done at several of the sites.
