National Medical Expenditure Survey: Use of Nursing and Personal Care Homes by the Civilian Population, 1987. Research Findings 23

This report from the National Medical Expenditure Survey (NMES) Institutional Population Component presents estimates of the civilian population using nursing and licensed personal care homes during 1987. Estimates are presented for population totals and the percent using nursing homes by sociodemographic characteristics and selected measures of functional and health status. Similar estimates are provided for the percent of persons age 65 and over admitted to a nursing home during 1987 as well as the percent of those institutionalized throughout 1987, and for the distribution of admissions, discharges, and total nursing home days. Estimates of the length of stay of nursing home discharges in 1987 are also presented. Variations in measures of nursing home use are assessed by age and sex, 1986 income, Medicaid status, and functional and cognitive limitations. The findings are related to known differences in the characteristics of persons who stay in the nursing home for less than 1 year and persons with longer stays.
