Canadian Environmental Protection Act Priority Substances List Assessment Report: Dibutyl Phthalate

Dibutyl phthalate is not currently produced in Canada. About 540 tonnes/year are imported, however, for use mainly as a plasticizer in polyvinyl emulsions. Additional dibutyl phthalate may be imported into Canada in plastic products. Dibutyl phthalate is not expected to be persistent in air and water, but may be more persistent in sediments and soil. Based on these considerations, it has been concluded that dibutyl phthalate is not entering the environment in a quantity or concentration or under conditions that may have a harmful effect on the environment or that may constitute a danger to the environment upon which human life depends, or to human life or health.
