Reaching Out to Latino Elderly (Targeting Eldercare Program Resources andServices to Low-Income Minority Elderly)

The goal of the two year project was to develop strategies for improving Latinoelderly's access to entitlement and other community eldercare programs sponsored by the aging network in order to increase their changes for independent living. The project focused on getting access to: (1) programs (Social Security, SSI, Food Stamps) that can ameliorate Latino elderly's poor economic status; (2) programs that can improve their health condition (Medicare and Madicaid); (3) programs mandated by the Older Americans Act (OAA) for the most vulnerable and at risk and administered by Area Agencies on aging (AAA); (4) and other community eldercare programs that supplement and support the above programs. Project activities took place in six cities and with different Latino sub-groups conducted by teams of local elderly advocates in collaboration with NHCoA chapter and affiliate members, who sought to involve and mobilize formal and informal help giving networks on behalf of Latino elderly and their families.
