This testimony summarized information and comments from NIOSH regarding proposedrule on child labor regulations and the Work Experience and Career Exploration Programs (WECEP). Data which had been collected by NIOSH regarding adolescents treated for work related injuries were noted. Three of the proposed technical modifications in the procedure for obtaining occupational variations are felt by NIOSH to expose youth to activities with substantial potential for serious and disabling injury. NIOSH recommends that deep fryers and grills not be part of the job environment for 14 and 15 year olds in these WECEP. The use of ride on mowers should also be excluded and the current prohibitions concerning the age of workers loading or unloading goods to and from trucks should be extended to the same aged children involved in the WECEP program.
