Users Guide for the Selection of an Electrofusion System for Polyethylene GasPipe. Topical Report, April 1990-June 1994

This report describes a few important performance characteristics of five majorelectrofusion (EF) systems available in the U.S. market in order to assist local distribution (LDC's) in selecting a system that best fits their needs. The basis for this report evolved from an extensive study of EF being conducted by SwRI for the Gas Research Institute (GRI). Three manufacturers actively participated from the beginning of the program in an advisory capacity and in preparing samples for a parameter study. Two other manufacturers donated fittings and loaned power supplies to SwRI for the study later in the program. There are a number of unique features to the five different EF systems used on this program. There are three distinct methods of determining the time of fusion. One system has a unique quality assurance program that may be down loaded to a PC computer with software supplied by the vendor. Some units automatically identify the size and type of a fitting when it is attached to the power supply and one is self-regulating so that fitting identification is not required.
