This study examines Brazil's economic history from the change in regime in 1964,when a populist and constitutional but economically incompetent government was overthrown by the military, to 1992, when Brazil's first popularly elected president in more than a quarter of a century was forced from office for corruption. Brazil's economic prospects for some time to come will be a legacy of this period, which witnessed not only unprecedented growth, but levels of inflation and external debt that would have been unimaginable in earlier decades.
