The report presents papers resulting from a conference held in December 1992 atwhich a variety of methodologies and their applicability to the clinical practice guideline development process were discussed. Papers include a wide array of topics. Ways to improve clinical trials for more accurate meta-analyses are explored. Simple and complex formal models that use indirect evidence to estimate the effect of a treatment on health outcomes are addressed. Applications and limitations of the Confidence Profile Method in analysis of direct evidence are discussed and examples of the Method's use are provided. Methodologic approaches described in this volume can be utilized by both public and private individuals for developing future clinical practice guidelines.
