Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment

The charge to the Committee on Federal Regulation of Methadone Treatment was tostudy current Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) standards for narcotic addiction treatment and the regulation of methadone treatment programs pursuant to those standards. The report is organized around questions that pertain mainly to the use of methadone, and to some extent levo-alpha-acetyl-methadol (LAAM), for the treatment of opiate addiction. In addition, the use of methadone for analgesic purposes is discussed in the context of the unanticipated effects of the regulations on pain management.
