Property Rights in a Social and Ecological Context: Case Studies and DesignApplications

The overview chapter of this book summarizes the findings on property rights andenvironmental resources--focusing on why property rights matter, the general problems they address, their structural forms, design principles, mechanisms by which they create linkages between human and ecological systems, and mechanisms by which they coordinate uses at different scales. They argue that policies addressing environmental problems must focus on general principles of property rights regimes and on the context in which such regimes are placed.
