The first section summarizes the scope of highway hazmat operations within theUnited States, the major types of hazmats transported, and incidents involving hazmats. The second section briefly summarizes hazmat routing signs set forth in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as standards for highways and why these signs are not now deemed adequate to handle all hazmat routing operations. The third section provides a detailed look at the literature involving past research and examination of various hazmat signs, both within the United States and Canada.
