Operational Field Test of a Route Guidance-System in Gothenburg: TANGO Evaluationof Traffic Safety Aspects

The aim of this project was to evaluate the traffic safety aspects of anelectronic route guidance system based in the vehicle. A better understanding of how drivers react and how their behavior is influenced by RTI-equipment in the vehicle is required. It is also important that development of examination methods follows the same time schedule as the technical development of RTI and its implementation. This project has used an observation method for description of car drivers' behavior in real traffic. The results in this report show that there are no changes in driving behavior as a result of using the route guidance system which could influence traffic safety in a negative way. Comparisons between the number of risk situations show higher figures when the drivers used traditional road map navigation instead of route guidance on a display together with synthetic voice messages. Reservations about the results should be emphasized since the field test was limited. Reliable conclusions can only be drawn after considerably longer field test periods.
