Expert-Panel Review of the Integrated Waste Package Experiments Research Project

An independent panel of five experts in materials science, combining expertise inthe areas of localized corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, thermal stability and microbially influenced corrosion, was selected to review the Integrated Waste Package Experiments (IWPE) research project conducted at the Center for Nuclear Waste Regulatory Analyses (CNWRA). The panel members reviewed the final report of the IWPE, provided comments, and attended a two-day workshop in San Antonio in which their main comments were resolved. In addition, the panel members provided recommendations for the new research project, Engineered Barrier System Experimental Research (EBSER), as well as a prioritization of research topics. The main conclusions arising from the workshop were: (1) the endorsement of the use of E(rp) as a predictive tool for evaluating the occurrence of localized corrosion (pitting and crevice corrision); (2) the prioritization of the experimental research emphasizing the failure modes of carbon steels as the outermost barrier; and (3) the need for a technical workshop with the participation of DOE researchers and managers.
