The NGK Metals Corporation is a beryllium processing plant located approximatelyfour miles north of Reading, Pennsylvania. The beryllium processing plant has released hazardous substances into the environment through on-site disposal of process wastes, wastewater discharge, and air emissions. Based upon environmental and exposure data evaluated by ATSDR, concentrations of contaminants detected in air, water, soil, and sediment are not believed to represent any public health hazard. However, ATSDR has classified the NGK site as an Indeterminate Public Health Hazard. The classification is primarily due to the fact that no data exist for air (prior to 1979) and groundwater (prior to 1990).
