The report demonstrates the use of Clock Spring (trademark), illustrated inFigure 1, is a fiberglass composite that has a 'memory' resulting from its method of manufacture that constrains its shape to be a cylinder of several concentric layers, similar to the winding spring in a clock or watch. The glass fibers in a composite wrap are continuous and are aligned circumferentially to maximize the composite strength in the hoop direction. When installed on a pipeline with an appropriate adhesive, as shown in the photograph in Figure 2, the resulting structure provides circumferential reinforcement and reduction in hoop stress under the wrap. This method of repair is rapid and can be accomplished without the need for cutting and rewelding the pipeline.
