Morbidity and mortality statistics are limited in their accuracy in measuringdisease magnitude and treds. However, for some diseases that affect many people, notably coronary heart disease. cerebrovascular disease, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and asthma, statistics of acceptable quality are available. They should be summarized and interpreted periodically. This chartbook, like its predecessors, contains statistics for a limited set of common cardiovascular, lung, and blood diseases. It is anticipated that subsequent issues will continue to update these statistics and present statistics on related diseases and population characteristics and interpret their meaning for the American people.
