National Transportation Safety Board Marine Accident Report: Collision of theNetherlands Antilles Passenger Ship Noordam and the Maltese Bulk Carrier Mount Ymitos in the Gulf of Mexico, November 6, 1993

On November 6, 1993, the NOORDAM, a Netherlands Antilles passenger ship headingfor the Port of New Orleans, collided with the MOUNT YMITOS, a heavily laden Maltese bulk carrier heading for open sea. Nine crewmembers on the NOORDAM received minor injuries, and damage to both vessels was substantial. The report examines the following safety issues: maintaining a proper lookout on the NOORDAM, performance of the master of the MOUNT YMITOS, Holland America Line oversight, and emergency passenger notification procedures.
