Southbend Subdivision Health Outcomes Study, Harris County, Texas

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry conducted a health study ofthe Southbend subdivision, 20 miles southeast of Houston, Texas, and adjacent to the Brio Refining Co., Inc. and Dixie Oil Processors, Inc. (DOP) National Priorities List hazardous waste sites. The contaminants of concern at the Brio and DOP sites were volatile organic compounds, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, semivolatile organic compounds, and various metals. The purpose of the cross-sectional health study was to compare occurrences of selected self-reported symptoms and illnesses and to compare biomarker levels for current residents of the Southbend subdivision with those of a demographically similar comparison population.
