The 5-acre Silresim site is in Lowell, Massachusetts, and was previously thelocation of a chemical waste reclamation facility. Groundwater and soil (surface and subsurface) are contaminated primarily with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and metals. Low levels of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins/furans, polychlorinated biphenyls (PBCs), and pesticides have also been detected. VOCs, amines, phenols, and dimethylformamide (DMF) were detected in the ambient air during the various studies. Current exposures and potential health impacts are limited because of the interim remedial measures, fencing and capping of the site, and site security. Based on the available information, this site represents no apparent public health hazard.
