Intelligent Monitoring System for Safe Crane Operations

摘要

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has experienced numerousaccidents with truck-mounted cranes, involving bending of telescope booms and turrent gear drive failures. The resulting repair costs and delays prompted the Department to explore means to warn operators when crane capacities are on the threshold of being exceeded. A system was developed and tested that assists operators in avoiding hazardous operations through use of computer monitored electronic sensors. The sensors were exposed to a series of experimental tests duplicating loading conditions identified as critical in the field, in order to study their response to such loading conditions.
