Monitoring to toxic effects of 1,6-dinitropyrene, a potent mutagen and carcinogenassociated with diesel exhaust particles, may provide a biomarker of exposure to diesel exhaust in humans. DNAadduct formation in lung, liver, white blood cells, and spleen lymphocytes was measured and mutagen induction at the hprt locus in spleen T lymphocytes was characterized in F344 rats in which 1,6-dinitropyrene (0-150 micrograms)was implanted into the lungs by a protocol known to induce lung
