摘要

It has been shown that the direct reaction between methane and oxygen may becatalysed so that at 1100k carbon monoxide and hydrogen are formed in very high yields (90-96%). This partial oxidation reaction has been studied in detail and the evidence suggests it may provide an alternative and improved route to the industrial production of synthesis gas. A new class of catalyst for partial oxidation and steam reforming of methane to synthesis gas has been discovered. The catalyst is based on molybdenum carbide and may have economic advantages over conventional catalysts based on precious metals.
