The report--which documents the findings of a background study of industry needsin the area of manufacturing systems integration--defines the initial MSE project focus in detail and sets the technical direction for project efforts. The report also describes the principal types of product realization software applications now in use, reviews efforts within manufacturing industry towards developing integration solutions, discusses relevant research trends in the field of product realization, and surveys standards which may be applicable to the work of the MSE project. A brief review is also given of some potentially relevant supporting technologies from the realm of information technology.
