Estimating Ability in an Adaptive Test

This study was conducted by the Office of Personnel Research and Development within the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) to provide psychometric support for the Computerized Adaptive Test (CAT) version of the Administrative Careers with America (ACWA) Group 6 (Law Enforcement and Investigations) examinations. This CAT test was developed under the auspices of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), which will use the test for entry-level selection into various INS occupations. This report is one of a series of technical documents for the INS-CAT, each focused on a different aspect of the psychometric requirements for developing a CAT.
