The design and operation of biological waste water treatment systems is gettingmore and more complex due to the increase of the number of components that has to be removed by the system and the demands on the effluent quality. Beside the removal of organic compounds, the attention is now focused on the biological removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. A method to increase the understanding of the complex behavior of waste water treatment systems is the development of mathematical models.
