Socio-Economic Review of Appalachia: The Evolving Appalachian Economy

The study examines the Appalachian economy thirty years after the landmark report211u001ethat led to the formation of the Appalachian Regional Commission. Appalachia's 211u001eindustrial composition continues to retard its growth, but Appalachia today is 211u001enot a stagnating, underdeveloped, lagging region. On the contrary, much of the 211u001eregion is growing faster than the nation in employment and earnings, and 211u001eAppalachia is attracting jobs in high-paying, growing industries. Yet parts of 211u001eAppalachia have neither recovered from the diminishing employment opportunities 211u001ein manufacturing and mining nor attracted or spawned their shares of the nation's 211u001egrowing high-wage industries. An accurate description of Appalachia today must 211u001efocus on its diversity. Appalachia is a dynamic, growing region that contains 211u001esome of the poorest areas in the nation.
