In 1993 and 1994, two manned investigations were carried out on the NLR moving211u001ebase Research Flight Simulator (RFS), concerning several aspects involving the 211u001euse of an advanced forward-looking windshear detection system in the final 211u001eapproach phase of a flight. In the first (1993) experiment, three windshear 211u001edetection systems were evaluated separately, or in combination, together with 211u001ethree specific flight procedures, without presenting any weather (or windshear) 211u001einformation to the crew on a weather type of display. The three systems evaluated 211u001econsisted of functional models of: a reactive windshear detection system, a non-211u001escanning LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) forward-looking windshear detection 211u001esystem, and a ground-based Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) system. With the 211u001elatter a ground-to-air data-uplink connection to the aircraft cockpit was 211u001esimulated.
