Feeding Method and Fat Tolerance in Very Low Birth Weight Neonates

Two approaches were available for providing very low birthweight neonates with211u001eadequate nutriton: (1) parental nutrition, which was complicated by the limited 211u001etolerance of very low birthweight neonates for the various nutrients; or (2) 211u001eenternal nutrition, complicated by the limited volume of intake. The authors 211u001eallocated 90 very low birthweight neonates (750-1,499 grams) randomly to 211u001econtinuous gastric drip or intermittent bolus feeding as soon as their clinical 211u001econdition allowed enternal feedings. The authors monitored intestinal tolerance 211u001eto the formula, growth (by antrhopometric measurements and estimation of body 211u001ecomposition by total body electrical conductivity), rate of progression of 211u001efeedings, and macronutrient balance studies.
