This report surveys the information available on fuel injection practice focusingon the furnace performance that has been obtained at high rates of natural gas and coal injection. The information is used to support an economic evaluation of the consequences of natural gas and coal injection and of coinjection of natural gas and coal in a typical medium-size furnace. The evaluation examines costs over the range of furnace productivities and injection rates that will be required in response to changes in demand for steel, and shows the impact over the entire business cycle. Based on the available data, it appears that the coinjection practice can provide productivity benefits compared to coal injection only practice, by allowing the furnace to accept more supplemental oxygen. More data are required, however, to define furnace performance for this practice.
