Toxicology and carcinogenicity studies were conducted by inhalationadministration of nickel sulfate hexahydrate to groups of 63 to 65 female F344/N rats at concentrations of 0, 0.12, 0.25, or 0.5 mg/m3 (equivalent to 0, 0.06, or 0.11 mg nickel/m3) and groups of 80 B6C3F1 mice of each sex at concentrations of 0, 0.25, 0.5, or 1 mg/m3 (equivalent to 0, 0.06, 0.11 or 0.22 mg nickel/m3) for 6 hours per day 5 days per week, for up to 104 weeks. Under the conditions of these 2-year inhalation studies , there was no evidence of carcinogenic activity of nickel sulfate hexahydrate in male or female F344/N rats exposed to 0.12, 0.25, or 0.5 mg/m3 (0.03, 0.06 or 0.11 mg nickel/m3). There was no evidence of carcinogenic activity of nickel sulfate hexahydrate in male or female B6C3F1 mice exposed to 0.25, 0.5, or 1 mg/m3 (0.06, 0.11, or 0.22 mg mickel/m3).
