The oxidation characteristics of copper matte under simulated Kennecott-OutokumpuFlash Converting process conditions shall be presented on the basis of laboratory studies. This project is concerned with the determination of the effects of operating variables on the reaction of solid copper matte particles. Experiments were carried out in a large laboratory-scale flash furnace at 1100 degrees C, P02 = 70 and 100% O2 and oxygen to matte mass ratio of 0.25 and 0.33 in the feed stream, and at 920 deg. C, Po2 = 50 and 80 % O2 and oxygen to matte mass ratio of 0.15, 0.25 and 0.33. In this work, the oxidation behavior of Kennecott copper matte (matte grade = 70% Cu) was studied. Five different particle size fractions of granulated matte were used; x<37 um, x=37-74 um, and x=74-105 um, x=105-149 um and x<149 um. The matte was tested by varying four parameters: temperature, particle size, partial pressure of oxygen and oxygen to matte mass ratio (=f). Under each experimental condition, 1-4 samples were taken at different locations along the center of the furnace.
