Assessment of 3M Electronic Marker System for Locating Underground Plastic GasPipe. Final Report, September 1993-February 1995

The 3M Marker/Locator System has been evaluated in the laboratory and at sixfield sites to determine the performance and suitability for locating buried plastic gas pipe. In addition, recommended practices and procedures for use of this system were prepared. This system makes use of miniature electronic markers which are attached to the pipe prior to installation. These are detected by the hand-held Locator above the surface of the ground. Effects of the orientation of the Markers, the depth of the pipe and the properties of the soil on the performance have been evaluated as has the spacing between adjacent markers. Potential sources and effects of interference on the system performance were also considered in the evaluation.
