This report describes a preliminary investigation of the effect of a thin layerof liquid coating orifice flowmeter surfaces on the performance of the flowmeter. Natural gas pipeline conditions were simulated by flowing air through a piping system containing an orifice flowmeter. The range of Reynolds numbers and the system pressure conditions were typical of those found in natural gas pipelines. Two-, six-, and ten-inch systems were typical of different orifice throat diameters for each line size. Tests were conducted by establishing low flow through the system, increasing the flow by discrete amounts to the highest flowrate, and reducing the flow by the same discrete amounts to the initial low flatrate. System parameters were measured and recorded at each flowrate by a computer based data acquisition system. The data were used to calculate an orifice flowmeter discharge coefficient at each flowrate.
