摘要

Seeking to increase the availability or rural transportation for elders, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs conducted a demonstration project. The major goal of the project was the provision of basic transportation services to rural dwelling, low-income elders. The major objective for the project was to show that a volunteer organization can be developed in the target area of North Central Florida, specifically Hamilton, Lafayette, and Suwannee Counties. The primary method used was building the community leadership's capacity to remove barriers to providing transportation services to elders. Originally, the existing transportation resources of rural churches were to be identified and used. That concept was changed when a survey of churches revealed that virtually no church-owned vehicles were available for transportation that is not church-related.
