Testing Fluidized Bed Incinerators for Energy-Efficient Operation for theSouthtowns Sewage Treatment Agency

The report describes the results of testing two methods for improving the energyefficiency of the fluid bed incinerators at the Southtowns Sewage Treatment Agency. The first method used paper pulp and polymer conditioning agents for municipal sludge instead of lime and ferric chloride. Automatic control of the incinerator was the second method evaluated. The Southtowns sludge incinerator project had three objectives: to determine the effect on sludge incineration (e.g. cost, incinerator throughput, energy use, ash production, and emissions quality) using polymer and paper pulp, instead of lime and ferric chloride, as conditioners; to compare automatic to manual incinerator system control in terms of cost, incinerator throughput, energy use, ash production, and emissions quality; and to calculate incineration system heat balances and determine the feasibility of waste heat recovery and reuse.
