The paper provides an initial assessment of a Cray T3D MPP system for anengineering application. A comparison of the performance of a Direct Numerical Simulation code on the Cray T3D and the Intel iPSC/860 is presented. The floating point performance of standard Fortran 77 indicates that there is room for improvement and details concerning necessary optimizations to improve the floating point performance of a conjugate gradient solver are given. The lack of a secondary cache clearly affects the cache efficiency when preconditioning is applied. In comparison to the Intel iPSC/860, the CRAY T3D shows a substantial improvement in performance and also offers a low-latency, high-bandwidth communications network.
