Aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) concentrations were211u001edetermined in eggs (n=5), livers (n=24), and stomach contents (n=14) of black-211u001elegged kittiwakes (Rissa tridactyla) in Prince William Sound, Alaska, following 211u001ethe March 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. The single egg collected in 1989 from an 211u001eoiled colony was contaminated with diesel oil, and the four eggs collected in 211u001e1990 from an unoiled colony were not contaminated. Kittiwake livers did not 211u001econtain PAH concentrations above the method detection limit, but concentrations 211u001eof phytane and unresolved complex mixture (UCM) in the livers suggested that 211u001ekittiwakes ingested oil in 1989. Stomach contents of kittiwakes, presumably 211u001eschooling fish, did not contain an aliphatic signal, but did contain PAH 211u001eresidues, almost exclusively napthalenes. 'Fingerprinting' of the oil ingested by 211u001ekittiwakes was not possible, and the significance of oil ingestion to the 211u001ekittiwakes could not be determined.
