Pollution Prevention: An Informal Discussion (with Supporting Examples)

Pollution prevention activities in the United States of America have increasdconsiderably since the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA). If pollution prevention means cost-effective multi-media management of pollution through source reduction, we are seeing a move by national governments to promote the control of pollution by environmental management: using planning and design, rather than using end-of-pipe solutions, after the fact. The paper discusses some of the implications of not standardizing the definition of the term source in the mentioned definition of pollution prevention.
