The National Institute of Standards and Technology's Building and Fire ResearchLaboratory (BFRL) dispatched an advance team of three BFRL members, followed by a larger team of 18 members made up of individuals from a number of federal agencies and others affiliated with national earthquake engineering research centers. The teams were to observe, document, and summarize important lessons from this earthquake.
