Technical Description of a Model of the Carbon Cycle in Canadian Shield Lakes

A model of the carbon cycle in Canadian Shield lakes has been developed andtested using field observations on the fate of experimentally added C-14 in three lake basins at the Experimental Lakes Area in northwestern Ontario, Canada. The model was calibrated using data collected over a 16 year period from the north basin of Lake 226, and validated by applying it to the south basin of Lake 226 and Lake 224. The predictions of this model have been compared with the predictions of the more general Surface Water model of radionuclide transport and fate in lakes used in the biosphere model, BIOTRAC, developed for the assessment of Canada's Nuclear Fuel Waste Management Program.
