WDM and SDM in Future Optical Networks

摘要

The report presents a comparative assessment of the strengths and weaknesses ofwavelength division multiplexing (VDM) and space division multiplexing (SDM). The comparison is prompted by the fact that both SDM and WDM are viable technology options for future all-optical networks. The comparison is done for all-optical networks, considering a number of optical switching techniques and two modes of operation (single-hop and multi-hop). Only the multiplexing techniques SDM and WDM are consisted because they are the basis of all-optical networks.
