Evaluating Service Life of Anaerobic Joint Sealing Products and Techniques. FinalReport, December 1993-June 1996

The technical approach for this study involved detailed analytical studies,verified by field test results, to establish the magnitude and frequency of CI joint deformation imposed by repetitive traffic loads, as well as thermal expansion and contraction at the joints. Using the analytical results, full scale mechanical aging tests were performed on 12-in. (305-mm)-diameter CI joints, both untreated and treated with anaerobic sealants, to duplicate the joint deformations that would be sustained by 50 years of service life. Laboratory tests were performed, including gel time, cure through gap, wetting, viscosity, a battery of physical/chemcial tests, and aging. Cure characteristics were studied at various temperatures, including temperatures as low as 14 deg F (minus 10 deg C). Chemical aging characteristics were studied by means of special pin-and-collar tests.
