Performance Parameters for Shadow Mountain Dam. Technical Memorandum No. JW-8318-1

Shadow Mountain Dam and Dike are zoned earth and rockfill structures located onthe North Fork of the Colorado River about 11 miles upstream from Granby, Colorado. The features consist of a compacted earth fill dam and a series of compacted earth fill dikes extending westward from the right abutment of the dam. This focused summary of the performance parameters evaluation for Shadow Mountain Dam provides a guide to understanding and a quick means for the review of (1) the potential failure modes and (2) the most important aspects of the monitoring for assessing the dam's performance. Technical Memorandum (TM JW-8313-1) provides a complete discussion of the performance parameters. The foundation, abutments, embankment, and appurtenant structures have performed satisfactorily during the life of the project. However, certain conditions are such that failure is physically possible, and continued monitoring is prudent. The report discusses the potential failure modes associated with these conditions, the key monitoring parameters for each, and the expected behavior.
