Historical Estimates from the Drug Abuse Warning Network. 1978-94 Estimates ofDrug-Related Emergency Department Episodes. Advance Report Number 16

This report contains annual estimates of drug-related emergency department (ED)episodes for 1978 through 1994 from the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN), an ongoing national survey of hospital emergency departments. The estimates for 1978-87, sometimes referred to as the ex-post facto estimates, are presented for the first time in this report. These historic estimates are based on a statistical model that was developed to provide nationally representative estimates for the period prior to the implementation of a new national probability sample in DAWN (Introduced in 1988). These data provide the capability for describing long-term trends in ED episodes. This can increase our understanding of recent trends by putting them in a broader context.
