Introduction to Microbiology Relevant to the Canadian Nuclear Fuel WasteManagement Program: A Literature Review

This report is intended as an introduction for nonbiologists to explain thefundamentals of microbial growth. There is an overview of the history of microbiology to describe the development of the discipline. The chemical and thermodynamic parameters of bacterial metabolism are described. Some individual environments in which microorganisms live are recounted to illustrate how diverse these can be. The formation of biofilms is investigated to explain the effects of microbially induced corrosion. Finally, microbially mediated reactions of metals and radionuclides are examined.
