The study investigates the application of simulation along with field211u001eobservations for estimation of exclusive left-turn saturation flow rate and 211u001ecapacity. The entire research has covered the following principal subjects: (1) A 211u001esaturation flow model for protected phase that allows engineers to incorporate 211u001elocal-specific driving behavior in the analysis; (2) A permitted saturation flow 211u001emodel that accounts for the impact of driving behavior and traffic conditions at 211u001eboth the target and the opposing upstream intersections on the permitted 211u001esaturation flow rate; (3) A queue length model for estimation of the resulting 211u001equeue length under various phase schemes; and (4) A hybrid bay length impact 211u001emodel that provides engineers a convenient tool to assess the impact of various 211u001ebay lengths on the left-turn capacity at both isolated and coordinated 211u001eintersections. This report also describes the procedures for direct estimation of 211u001eintersection capacity with simulation, including a set of rigorous statistical 211u001etests for simulation parameter calibration from field data.
