Survey of the Fisheries of Hanalei Bay, Kauai

Recent large increases in activity and use of the total resources of remoteHanalei Bay motivated a study of its habitat and fish resources (Friedlander et al. 1995) and fisheries between December 1991 and December 1994. Between June 1992 and December 1993, quantitative data on effort and catch were collected for the fisheries (1) within the bay and (2) outside the bay, accessed via the Hanalei boat ramp. A standardized protocol of visual surveillance of effort and creel census of fishers was applied using a random sampling design stratified by weekday versus weekend/holiday, seasonal quarter of the year, type of gear, and general location (i.e., inside versus outside the bay). Boat traffic of all kinds (including fishing, tour boats, private pleasure craft, etc.) is fairly heavy in Hanalei Bay, especially in certain popular, congested areas. The total resources of the bay (including water space) are limited, and any significant increase in activity may produce conflicts among users.
