The paper is organized as follows: In Section 2, we summarize the approach of de211u001eGoey and ten Thije Bookkamp. Expressions are presented for the mass-burning rate 211u001emb in the burnt gases of stretched flames. In Section 3, we study the mass 211u001eburning rate mb for the special case of a constant stretch rate K and constant 211u001edensity po in the flame, described by a one-step irreversible reaction. The 211u001eanalysis shows that the Markstein number Mb found by Joulin and Clavin (1979) is 211u001erecovered in this case. The mass burning rate in the unburnt gases mu is analyzed 211u001esubsequently in Section 5 and the Markstein number Mu of Clavin and Williams 211u001e(1982) is found in the limit of an infinitely thin flame thickness.
