Summaries of the Statistical Data on Elder Abuse in Domestic Settings for FY 95211 and FY 96

The purpose of this study is to develop summaries and national estimates of the211u001edomestic elder abuse statistics for FY 95 and FY 96 that the National Center on 211u001eElder Abuse (NCEA) collected from state adult protective service (APS) agencies 211u001eand state units on aging (SUA) in 1997. Although this report is designed 211u001eprimarily to serve the elder abuse data needs of state APS and aging 211u001eprofessionals, other professionals concerned with the problem of domestic elder 211u001eabuse, including policymakers, advocates, researchers, and practitioners in a 211u001evariety of professions serving the elderly, are also expected to benefit from the 211u001einformation contained in this report. Studies and reports from professionals 211u001eworking in the fields of APS and SUA suggest that elder abuse in domestic 211u001esettings is a widespread problem, affecting a large number of vulnerable elderly 211u001epeople across the country. However, because it is still a largely hidden, elder 211u001eabuse in domestic settings is grossly underreported.
